Keeping Wireless Broadband Dial-up Connection Alive

I have noticed that locally available wireless broadband connections tend to disconnect when there is no active data transfer. At least it is the best known reason for Mobitel Wireless Broadband connections to disconnect. Below is a work around to address the problem:

Under Windows:

Open command prompt (Start -> Run -> Type “cmd” ->Press Enter)

Type command “ping 8.8.8.8 -t -l 1″

ping  – command sends an echo request to a given host regularly

8.8.8.8 – is the IP Address for Google Public DNS

-t option – instructs ping command to ping the specified host continuously.

-l 0 option – instructs ping command to send only 0 bytes and receive only 8 bytes of data per request (this is used to avoid unwanted bandwidth wastage by using default value of 32 bytes)

This will keep a connection open with Google Public DNS server and server will keep sending data to your computer, which helps in keeping the internet connection alive. If you are going to use this command frequently just create a BAT file with above command and place it in your desktop. BAT file that can be used to keep internet connection alive can be downloaded HERE.

USB Tethering with Windows XP

Windows XP contains the drivers you need to take advantage of USB tethering, but you must install a configuration file before connecting your phone to your Windows XP computer, to instruct Windows XP how to configure itself to use those drivers.

Download the following configuration file (tetherxp.inf) to your Windows XP computer. Typically, you can right click on the link and choose “Save As”. (If your browser appends .html to the file name, you will need to edit the name to remove the .html extension.)

Use the USB cable that came with your phone to connect your phone to your computer.

On the Android phone, press Home, press Menu, and touch Settings to open the Settings application.

Touch Wireless & networks > Tethering & portable hotspot.

Check USB tethering.

When Windows XP’s New Hardware Wizard opens, select No, not at this time and click Next.

Select Install from a list or specific location and click Next.

Click Browse to browse to the directory where you installed the configuration file you downloaded in Step 1 and click Next. Windows XP uses the configuration file to configure itself to support USB tethering with the Android phone.

When Windows XP finishes installing the software for Android USB Ethernet/RNDIS, click Finish.

You can now use the new Windows XP local area network connection provided by your phone via USB tethering. For more information about configuring networks in Windows XP, see the documentation that comes with Windows.

PPTP vs OpenVPN Service from TorGuard.net VPN Service

March 4, 2013

Both OpenVPN and PPTP VPN are quite a bit the same. Each has its own strengths, but it in some cases it’s hard to go wrong using either of them. The biggest factor is going to come down to your needs. If you don’t have a requirement to run on mobile phones and you’re not fussy over 256 bit packet encryption, and use of the OpenSSL library, you really can choose either one of the options and end up just fine. TorGuard clients don’t have to choose between the two, as all of our VPN packages come with acces to both PPTP and OpenVPN.
